Winter 2023

PEAK PRe-Season #2 (2/25) REcap

12 weeks of training! The worst Denver winter in 15 years! Snow on the ground every week! Temperatures below zero at some point, most weeks. The guys got it done in NOVEMBER, DECEMBER, JANUARY and FEBRUARY! The Harriers accumulated roughly 5,600 miles over the course of the winter as a team. 15-20 guys every day came to BD 154 to get the miles in. Before the official outdoor track season starts on Monday, February 27th, the Regis Harriers showcased why they are one of the best up and coming programs in the State! 11 boys ran at the meet in 2023, compared to 5 in 2022. The competitiveness, the placing and the times show that this group is improving and putting in the work! 10 out 11 boys PR'ed. 9 in the 1600m and 1 in the 3200m. Highlights included a 1-2 finish in Heat 3 of the 1600m by Braeden Focht '25 and John Burns '23. Check out the times/places below!

Good Samaritan Volunteering Recap (2/12/23)

Boys,

What a great winter of TRAINING you have done these past 11 weeks!!!! Remember that you have chosen to be part of a winter “training” program and not just a winter “running” program! It has been so cool to see freshman all the way up to soon to be RJ graduates working hard together on easy runs, progression runs, track sessions, strides, time trials, long runs, hills, etc etc. Having 20ish guys everyday heading out for Foxfield run after Foxfield run is NOT EASY! You have chosen to make yourselves, your teammates and the entire program better! The journey to success in distance running takes time, patience, the appreciation, and journey of delayed gratification.

This has been the worst winter training weather I have experienced while a coach and athlete living in Colorado. This is the most snow the Denver metro area has had in roughly 15 years. That didn’t deter you from getting in the miles and having some fun!!!! Coach Connor, Schneider and myself are extremely proud of your efforts, as it is just the beginning!!!!

Good Samaritan House Volunteering Yesterday

So cool yesterday boys!!!! We had 10 athletes and 3 coaches helping out from 9-11:30 AM at Good Samaritan House in Downtown Denver. Regis Harriers get it done on and off the track! I love that we had a solid turn out to spend their Saturday morning being good citizens and helping where there was a need!!!! We always try to be good “teammates” to our fellow Harriers, but it is important to realize that we need to be good “teammates” to everybody else too!!!! Shout outs to David and Matty for devouring the “Pro” sandwiches, a big step up from the “Snarfs” size!

We are very proud to be your coaches because of the effort you give in all that you do! Academics, Athletics and beyond!! Being a good person and bringing your best efforts to all your endeavors is skill and I promise it will lead you to future successes in all facets of your life! CHOOSING to volunteer yesterday makes a difference, it was cool to be out there with each of you!

Regis Harriers RECHARGE WEEK!

The Regis Harriers began training at the end of November; we were the first of the Colorado State teams to begin their Winter Training! This is not hyperbole and was a very intentional decision. While most competitive CO programs ran at Nike Cross Regionals on November 19th down in Mesa, Arizona at Coyote Run Golf Course with the hopes of qualifying for the Nike Cross Nationals meet in Portland, Oregon; the Regis Harriers decided to recover immediately after their 17th place State Championship showing to begin training on November 28th!

This was a conscious decision and one that will/has already paid massive dividends to elevate our team’s general fitness and close the gap to other programs! Our Mile TT in January, showed that we are a very STRONG and aerobically fit group of harriers. With that being said, because we began training almost 3 months ago, it is important to let our legs absorb the training and take a recovery week prior to the start of track season! This upcoming week will be our RECHARGE WEEK!!!!

There will be no coaches meeting with you from Monday, February 13th- Saturday February 18th. HQ won’t be open after school either, so take that into consideration. If you boys choose to get together and get some chill easy runs in and some strides, cool! There isn’t any reason why you can’t get together and snag some miles after school. This will be a great opportunity to chill, rest up, and have some autonomy before the start of track season though!

“Suggested” Training Week

Use this week to give your body and mind what it needs to get ready to race your best in May, 3 months from now! It will be a long track season if you are NOT 100% FIRED UP to get rolling on Monday, February 27th, at our first track practice of the year!! I would recommend running 3-5 days this week to keep the body in the rhythm but take the freedom and flexibility to heart. YOU DO WHAT YOU WANT, erring on the side of chill 😊

You all have done a great job listening to coaches and our training goals/hopes for you and the program. This week, you do you! I might have a week that looks like this…..

Monday- 4-7 miles with your choice of tempo, fartlek, hills or stride (pick your favorite that makes you feel fast and free)

Tuesday- 4-6 miles chill

Wednesday- DAY OFF

Thursday- 3-5 miles relaxed (optional strides)

Friday- 4-7 miles with your choice of tempo, fartlek, hills or strides (pick your favorite that makes you feel fast and free)

Saturday- 4-6 miles or DAY OFF

January 26th 1600m Time Trial Results

39 Degrees, Slight wind, 1.5 clear lanes with snow surrounding the track! The Harriers shoveled earlier in the week during Academic Support and more boys were shoveling before the start of the school day and after 1st period on the day of the TT. The boys competed well! We had 18 RJ Harriers race over two days and had 4 boys (due to illness) helping time, cheer and finish line officiate!!! SUCH A COOL DAY!!!!

Winter is all about getting a HUGE base for a breakthrough track season and a springboard into summer training and a BIG XC season for RJXCTF. Training takes time and getting in the miles is what builds great runners and programs!

December- Building to 30-60 minutes of easy distance runs is the goal!

January- Continuing to build the base but throwing in some tempos/fartleks/strides.

February- Mileage stays high with a bit more intensity!

*The 13 weeks between the Start of Winter Training (Monday, November 28th and the Start of the Outdoor Track Season (Monday, February 27th) is all about CONSISTENTCY! The more often you show up to 154, the better your coaches can help you reach your goals! If we don't have school, get together with some teammates and run with them! Winter can be a grind because of the monotony and weather, but if you run with your teammates, it is much easier! Let's push ourselves and our teammates this Winter to reach new heights!!!
